1 Squad from the attached KCAM unit.
Rally Point; Dibben’s Homestead, South of Bates City 0900HRS
Extensive tree damage in the surrounding lawn and landscape. Trees in excess of 15ft-20ft, only 2 trees larger than 24” in diameter.
CPL McVey and PFC Baker established contact with property owner and a plan was formulated.
CPL McVey, PFC Baker and the property owner agreed that any large trees in excess of 24” and requiring heavy equipment or climbing gear and not posing a threat to property damage or loss of life were left to be processed by insured contractor.
Downed trees were cut, using chainsaws, into manageable pieces no larger than two people were able to safely lift. They were moved to processing areas located at or near the wood/ fence line that the property owner designated. This wood will be processed later by the Property owner for fire wood. Any timber not suitable for firewood was dragged by personal to a centralized area designated by the property owner to be burned at a later date. Using leaf and garden rakes the turf area, approximately 2 acres was cleared of small limbs and debris.
After completing the requested tasks the squad rallied at Skoluat Farm at approximately 1200hrs.
After arriving at Skoluat Farm the squad was reassigned to assist a Neighbor on the adjacent property, who had recently suffered a broken leg.
Two 15ft trees had blown down over the entrance of their drive way and had been pushed out of the way to gain access to the home.
The squad jumped to it, chainsaw cutting the trees and dragging the remnants off the lawn to a designated burn pile area.
The squad completed work at the second location at approximately 1230hrs. Both Property owners were extremely grateful for our help.
Five members from the KCAM unit departed for the day and proceeded onto their family commitments. Their service was appreciated.
The remaining members of the Squad linked up with 1st/3rd at Skoluat Farm at approximately 1245hrs.
PFC Baker, still recovering from a previous foot injury and not wanting to set back his recovery, also left for the day after Lunch. His service was appreciated.
After lunch Bravo Squad was tasked to the McGee farm across the road. They assisted in clearing out downed trees in the fence line and removing debris out from damaged buildings. To gain access to/and recover farm equipment, trailers, unspoiled building material and livestock feed some of this was accomplished by the use of a McGee family member operating a pickup truck and Farm tractor to drag out large tin roof sections and pushing large piles of tree debris.
Approximately 1430hrs the McGee Family thanked and dismissed the Volunteers. They were very appreciative for the help.
Bravo squad joined the rest of the unit on the Skoluat farm. They were re-tasked with assisting in the breakdown of the DEFAC, cleaning up of tools, raking up debris piles and aiding in the completion of a tin and lumber debris pile clean up in the pasture. The lumber needed to be separated from the tin. The tin was put into a large roll off contractor trash container and the lumber into a burn pile.
Apporoximately 1530hrs Capt Felix dismissed the Unit.
